Nursing Class of 1976 celebrates 50 years of friendship and impact

Fifty years after graduating from Georgian College’s Nursing program, members of the Class of 1976 returned to the Barrie Campus to reconnect, reminisce and celebrate an incredible milestone.

For some, it was the first time they had seen one another in half a century.

Organized by Class of 1976 alumna Barbara Crawford, the reunion brought former classmates back together to share stories and reflect on the experiences that shaped their time at Georgian. During their studies, they spent countless hours together in class, on hospital wards and socially. Many lived in the former nurses’ residence on Wellington Street, behind the old Royal Victoria Hospital, building friendships during a formative time in their lives.

Those friendships became harder to maintain after graduation. With few nursing jobs available in Ontario at the time, graduates dispersed across Canada and beyond, with some heading to Alberta and Newfoundland and others to the United States to begin their careers.

“We exchanged reminiscences of those days, many hilarious and some poignant,” Barbara said. “My peers were a wonderful group of supportive, curious, adventuresome and compassionate individuals who, it turns out, have truly made a difference in their varied careers as nurses.”

Their return to Georgian offered an opportunity not only to look back, but also to see how nursing education has evolved. The group toured the Sadlon Centre for Health, Wellness and Sciences, exploring today’s labs and learning about the technology and teaching methods now preparing the next generation of nurses.

“Georgian has made a significant and thoughtful investment in teaching nursing, and we are proud to be Georgian College alumni,” Barbara said.

The reunion was made even more meaningful by the presence of Sheila Wojcik, one of the Class of 1976’s nursing faculty members, giving former students the chance to reconnect with an instructor who helped shape their early development as nurses.

Five decades later, the reunion was a celebration of more than a shared graduation year. It was a chance to honour the friendships that began at Georgian, the careers that followed and the lasting impact this remarkable group of nurses has made along the way.
