Georgian welcomes provincial investment to expand enrolment and meet regional workforce demand

On Oct. 15, the Ontario government announced it is investing $25 million to fund 987 additional seats at Georgian, helping to meet growing demand for postsecondary education and prepare more learners for in-demand careers across the region.

Parliamentary Assistant Lorne Coe, on behalf of the Ministry of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security (MCURES), along with the Hon. Doug Downey, MPP for Barrie, Springwater, Oro-Medonte and Ontario’s Attorney General, visited Georgian’s Barrie Campus to mark the announcement and tour select program areas that will benefit from the funding and future enrolment growth, including the Brand Family 360 Interdisciplinary Simulation Space, high fidelity simulation lab and teaching apartment in the Sadlon Centre for Health, Wellness and Sciences.

This funding is part of MCURES’s $1.7 billion investment to support a total of 70,000 news seats across Ontario postsecondary institutions.

“We’re grateful to the Government of Ontario for investing in the high-quality, career-focused education that Georgian offers to serve our communities and beyond,” said Kevin Weaver, President and CEO, Georgian College. “There is growing demand for our students and graduates, and this investment in key programs will help us meet Ontario’s workforce and innovation needs as the population in our region grows and changes.”

Parliamentary Assistant Lorne Coe, on behalf of the Ministry of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security, marked the announcement at Georgian’s Barrie Campus this week.

The announcement comes after Georgian released its new report, From Insight to Impact, earlier this week, which found that between 2025 and 2031, the number of occupations in our region requiring a college education is projected to grow by nearly 13,000, exceeding growth in demand for university-educated workers. Across Ontario, nearly 947,000 college-educated workers will be needed over the next decade, underscoring the importance of colleges in preparing the province’s future workforce.

This investment recognizes the important role Georgian plays in delivering career-focused education, supporting regional economic development and helping address Ontario’s evolving workforce needs.
