A message from Kevin Weaver, President and CEO

The Georgian College community is saddened to learn that one of the slain South Simcoe Police officers involved in yesterday’s shooting was a Georgian alumnus.

Constable Morgan Russell graduated in 1988 from our Law and Security program. According to his police service, he was a 33-year veteran of the service, and assigned to uniform patrol. He is survived by his wife and two adult children.

To Morgan’s family, friends, and fellow alumni, I offer my deepest condolences. To the South Simcoe Police and the family of Const. Devon Northrup, my deepest sympathies are with you as well. Georgian’s Community Safety alumni make a positive impact in our community and their courage to face dangerous situations each and every day is to be commended.

In these difficult times, community and support are so important. For those at Georgian who need to talk, free and confidential counselling is available to all students, and employees are encouraged to access the Employee and Family Assistance Program.

In memory of Morgan and Devon, the Georgian flag will be lowered at the Barrie and Orillia campuses – Barrie is where Morgan studied in the 1980s and Orillia is the home of many of our Community Safety programs.
