Biography

A Registered Interior Designer and design educator with 25 years of professional practice spanning multiple typologies, including: large-scale commercial interiors, mixed-use, multi-family residential design, high-end single family residential, retail/hospitality and adaptive reuse. With extensive experience leading multidisciplinary teams, mentoring junior designers, and delivering client-focused design solutions from concept through construction, Robert’s approach to design education is based on real-world design challenges, methodologies and industry expectations. With a project portfolio spanning the globe, he offers this diverse insight to his teaching – both culturally and in building science.

An early exposure to the notion of brand experience and the design of built space sparked an interest into the integration of these subjects, leading to a research focus exploring these ideas. He has delivered course content across disciplines, including teaching components of senior-level Marketing courses, and consulted with well-recognized luxury brands on the importance of designing for the client – always avoiding the one-size-fits-all approach.

Robert has been in numerous trade journals, newspapers and other publications, and currently writing a book on retail design.

As designers, we have an opportunity to affect the ways in which people understand their built surroundings. Hopefully, we aim to do so with a positive approach, recognizing we all bring our own perspectives, cultural influences and lived experiences. When working with students and young designers early in their career, I encourage them draw on their background to inform their process and methodology, creating design solutions that are as unique as they are.
