Prof Standards in Policing

Course description

The purpose of this course is to reinforce students’ use of professional standards in policing including conduct that advances the vision, mission, supporting values, goals and objectives of police organizations. The investigation of external public oversight bodies and internal police complaints systems within policing are closely examined including police disciplinary processes involving formal, informal and alternate dispute resolutions. In addition, students critically examine several aspects of provincial legislation, Human Rights legislation, Risk Management, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019 and various police discipline cases in detail.

Students registering for credit courses for the first time must declare a program at the point of registration. Declaring a program does not necessarily mean students must complete a program, individual courses may be taken for skill improvement and upgrading.
