Professor Kim Reid has worked in partnership with Georgian’s Indigenization Specialist, Kaila McCormick, to seamlessly incorporate the Seven Grandfather Teachings into a communications course. The process began with an enthusiastic faculty member, Kim, reaching out to the Indigenization Specialist for guidance. Together, they brainstormed and came up with the idea to discuss the Seven Grandfather Teachings and their link to communication practices. Kaila drafted a presentation, delivered it to a COMM 1016 class, and it took off from there.
One of our main goals is to increase faculty confidence when addressing Indigenous topics. Kim was able to take the knowledge she gained from the presentation, adapt it and deliver it in a way that works for her and her students. Kim plans to continue to incorporate this Indigenous knowledge into her classroom, making her a champion for the Indigenization process here at Georgian.
