Georgian is committed to environmental sustainability. To celebrate Waste Reduction Week from Oct. 19 to 25, the college is implementing three initiatives.

Campus Cleanup

On Wednesday, Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to noon, everyone is welcome to help clean up Georgian’s Barrie, Orillia and Owen Sound campuses. A FREE lunch is included at noon, for all registered participants. Meetup locations are TLC in Barrie, the flagpole in Orillia, and the foyer in Owen Sound. Anyone who brings a reusable mug will get a free coffee voucher, only redeemable that day. Register for the cleanup .

Disposable coffee cups are getting between Georgian and its landfill diversion goals. The Barrie Campus alone uses 2.4 million cups a year, or 6,600 a day. So from Oct. 19 to 25 – during Waste Reduction Week – Georgian is encouraging all students and staff to take a selfie with their reusable mugs and post it to Twitter, Instagram or Georgian’s Facebook page with the hashtag #GCKilltheCup for a chance to win $100 for Georgian Stores. Participants can also take the #GCKilltheCup pledge at GeorgianCollege.ca/killthecup.

Piloting new waste receptacles

Georgian is testing out three new waste receptacle options to see if they’ll improve landfill diversion. If you try them out, be sure to offer your feedback at GeorgianCollege.ca/wastepilot for a chance to win lunch for two at a campus food venue of your choice. They’ll be at Owen Sound and Orillia campuses in November. In October, try them at the Barrie Campus:
– Next to Subway
– Outside the library, by the stairs
– By the M Building Tim Hortons, in the main hallway
