Are you prepared for an emergency on campus? Test out Georgian’s processes and practise what to do during lockdown and fire evacuation drills on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
Make an effort to conceal yourself and barricade your space as if an armed intruder were on campus.
Remember, disregard the fire alarm system during a lockdown (unless otherwise informed). Silence your cell phone and remain quiet. If you’re in a hallway or large open area, find somewhere to barricade yourself or leave if you can. In classrooms with high visibility, remove backpacks and other items from desks. Do everything you can to ensure that a passerby who gives the room a cursory glance will think it’s vacant.

Leave the building as if a real fire were underway. If safe to do so, close all doors and windows – but do not lock them. Evacuate using the closest designated emergency exit and stairwell; do not use the elevators. If you have mobility issues, move to an “Area of Refuge” at the top of a stairwell, well off to the side to allow those evacuating to continue to exit the building. Move at least 30 metres away from the building, leaving clear access for emergency services. Do not re-enter until authorized by the fire department, Security or Physical Resources.
The alarm will sound at 11 a.m. at all campuses, except Barrie.
