The streets of Orillia were packed Saturday night with walkers aiming to help the homeless in the community. Among them were Human Services and Community Safety students from Georgian’s Community Safety Task Force, studying in such areas as policing, corrections and security.
The students walked for 10 km, raising funds for Christian Men’s Lighthouse in Orillia. The organization supports the homeless and helps put a roof over their heads and food on their tables.
More than 40 teams registered with 256 walkers; 725 donors helped raise over $39,000.
Coldest Night of the Year events also took place in other communities throughout Canada. In total, more than 50,000 people were walking at the same time in another location.
