Retired Nursing professor Sylvia van der Weg has been honoured as Georgian college’s newest Professor Emeritus. The designation was bestowed during convocation ceremonies at the Barrie Campus on Oct. 23.

The honourary designation of Professor Emeritus is granted to retired faculty members who have demonstrated exemplary service to the college and its communities.

During her almost 12 years at Georgian College, Sylvia van der Weg empowered students to connect and embrace each learning opportunity not only through her creative teaching, but also through her passion and dedication.

Her professional contributions at Georgian included participation in co-operative learning workshops, ‘Caring Curriculum’ conferences, information technology conferences and writing sections of the textbook Canadian Fundamentals of Nursing. She remains an active member of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario and the College of Nurses of Ontario.

At Georgian, van der Weg is perhaps best known for designing and being instrumental in the annual trip to the Dominican Republic.

This is a massive volunteer undertaking that has grown over the years to include not only nursing students, but students from various health disciplines and medical professionals from throughout the community.

Her work co-ordinating the trip has helped bring much-needed health care to thousands of people in the poorest regions of the Dominican Republic.

Driven by her vision and previous experience in Kenya, participants acquire hands-on experience, provide basic health care and gain a better understanding and appreciation for the culture of the Dominican people
