On March 26, more than 60 prospective students and family members attended a tour of Lester B. Pearson International Airport in Toronto, hosted by the Aviation Management Advisory Committee at Georgian College. This informative tour offered insight into the various career possibilities in aviation and provided a practical view of what the future could hold for graduates of Georgian College’s Aviation Management Program.
The tour was designed to give an inside look at several key areas that are essential to the global aviation industry. Members of the advisory committee- including Bill Newman, Director of Strategic Projects Corporate Affairs for GTAA; Michael Barfoot, Manager, Regulatory Affairs- Flight Operations Air Canada and Wayne Anaka, President WGA-AVCON Enterprises Inc.- led the group through the Central De-Icing Facility, Skyservice FBO and an Air Canada hangar where they boarded a Boeing 777-300.
Staff members greeted the group at various checkpoints and provided helpful information, educating the group on the industry and answering any questions. Students left feeling inspired and excited about a career in the aviation industry and beginning their education at Georgian College.
“This was a unique way to showcase the Aviation Management program to prospective students,” says Barb Watts, Associate Dean, Canadian Aviation Institute.
Georgian College will celebrate 25 years offering aviation studies at the Barrie Campus. The three-year Aviation Management advanced diploma program incorporates a full-year of co-op placements. Graduates have the opportunity to work in such fields as airline management, airport management, airport planning, flight dispatch, aircraft maintenance and government aviation agencies. Articulation agreements with Emby-Riddle Aeronautical University, Griffith University and Loughborough University, also allows students the opportunity to transfer their diploma towards a degree in Technical Management.
