They say when it rains it pours. That was certainly true last week for recent Georgian College graduate Vanessa Lloyd.
Lloyd completed her classes in December and wrote the National Dental Hygiene Certification Board exam in January. She spent February sending resumés to employers across Central Ontario and waiting to become officially registered with the College of Dental Hygienists.
Last week, she received an email confirming her registration to her profession. Ten minutes later, a dental office in her hometown of Shelburne called her to book an interview about a job opening. And just one hour later, she crossed the stage at the Barrie Campus convocation to accept her diploma.
“I was in total shock because it was all happening at once,” says Lloyd, who was with her proud parents when she fielded both messages. “It was a very happy day.”
A few days after graduating, Lloyd attended the interview and was hired on the spot. She starts her new position in May and is looking forward to her first day.
“It’s a great opportunity and it’s a 15-minute drive from my house – I’ll know a lot of the clients,” she explains. “It feels so good to be starting the career I want.”
Lloyd knew she wanted to work in a health profession as early as grade 10. She spent her summers and evenings supporting seniors in a nursing home and found she loved helping people. When it came time to choose a postsecondary program, she opted to take the Dental Hygiene program at Georgian College.
“I chose Georgian for a lot of reasons, but I loved that it had a brand-new building for me to learn in,” says Lloyd. “The labs were great for hands-on practice.”
She’s grateful to her family and everyone at Georgian – instructors, staff and friends – for keeping her on the path to success.
