10 terms every Georgian student needs to know
September 02, 2021

The first few weeks at Georgian can be a confusing transition as you try to learn the Georgian lingo. Here is a helpful list of 10 must-know terms to get you started!

1. Student portal

The student portal is a central online hub where you go to access all of your student systems such as your student email, Blackboard, Banner and MyPath. Here you can see your timetable, manage your calendar, see Georgian news, find student events, and much more!

2. Banner

Banner is the student information system where you will register for courses/make changes to your timetable, review your fees, get your T2202 tax form, view your unofficial transcript, see your personal information and more.

3. Blackboard

Blackboard is the online system where you will find your Georgian courses including your course syllabus, grades, course announcements, assignments, discussion boards and more.

4. MyPath

MyPath is an online academic planning tool that allows you to view your current course requirements, course grades, transfer credits, status, academic history, and even plan your future course selections. Use MyPath anytime from the student portal to track and map out your progress towards graduation.

5. ONEcard

ONEcard is your student ID and so much more. While some ONEcard functions are temporarily suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic, you’ll still want to make sure you have a ONEcard for your student ID, access to library services, and as a convenient way of paying at select on and off-campus vendors.

6. AppsAnywhere

AppsAnywhere allows you to access Georgian’s library of software. You can access it anytime through the student portal. Before downloading any software, make sure you read through the app information tab to ensure your computer is equipped with the proper software.

Please note that some software, like Microsoft Office and Adobe apps, is not available in AppsAnywhere when you are off campus. However, you can access them on library computers at the Barrie, Orillia and Owen Sound campuses.

7. MyCreds

MyCreds is a digital service that gives you 24/7 access to digital copies of many postsecondary documents.

You’ll be able to use it to access your official transcripts. Complete a Request a Transcript form in the student portal then watch your student inbox for instructions to log into MyCreds, once your documents have been added.

8. OSAP

The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) provides help through loans and grants based on your calculated financial need. For more information, visit the OSAP website.

9. Add/drop

The add/drop period is a segment of time following block course registration where you can add or remove individual classes from your timetable using Banner. You have 10 working days from the start of the semester to add or drop courses.

If you were unable to select your timetable during your block course registration window, you’ll be able to register for courses during the add/drop period. Please see important dates for add/drop deadlines.

Note: It’s your responsibility to ensure you’re selecting the correct courses required for your program. Adding, dropping and/or withdrawing from classes may cause changes to your student fees.

10. Academic Regulations

The academic experience at Georgian is focused on student-centered learning, support for student success, academic integrity and excellence. Academic regulations outline accountability for academic standards and integrity of course credits and program credentials. Make sure you check for updates to the regulations at the beginning of each year.
