Oshawa, ON – January 5th, 2013 – The Georgian Grizzlies women’s volleyball team was right back to work after the holiday break participating in the 25th anniversary of the Adidas Cup hosted by Durham College in Oshawa this past weekend.
The women started off with round robin play in a pool with fellow OCAA members Humber, Fleming and Niagara.
After a tough start dropping a game 2-0 (25-11, 25-7) to Humber, the Grizzlies rebounded with wins against Fleming 2-0 (25-11, 25-22) and Niagara 2-0 (25-24, 25-7) to finish with a 2-1 record good for second in their group and a spot in the championship bracket on Saturday.
The Grizzlies were back at it early Saturday with quarterfinal matchup against Bois-de-Boulogne of Montreal. Georgian gave all they had against their opponents but dropped a tough match 2-1 (25-22, 20-25, 15-5) against the eventual tournament champions. Georgian’s set win against Bois-de-Boulogne was one of only two that teams had against the visitors from Quebec had in the whole tournament.
Pressing on, the Grizzlies won their semi-final match in the B flight of the tournament against Redeemer by a 3-1 score (25-22, 25-11, 19-25, 25-22) to earn a spot in the finals of their group.
After losing the first set of the B flight final to Cambrian 25-16 the Grizzlies rebounded winning three straight sets (25-22, 25-23, 25-23) to earn the victory and a solid fifth place finish in the sixteen team tournament.
With a great weekend for the Grizzlies, outside hitter Erin McClean was named a first team all-star in the tournament.
The Grizzlies open up their second half OCAA schedule with back-to-back home games this weekend when they host Loyalist on Saturday, January 12th at 1pm and Boreal on Sunday, January 13th at 1pm.
Georgian wrapped up the first half with a 7-3 record and sit in 4th place in the east division standings just four points back of division leading Durham College.
