Grizzlies with a Strong Weekend

The Grizzlies Men’s Basketball Team won the Fleming Invitational Tournament after going 3-0 this past weekend

The Grizzlies Men’s Basketball Team put together an impressive performance winning the Fleming Invitational tournament in Peterborough, ON this past weekend.

The men started the tournament with an 82-71 win over the Canadore Panthers on Friday night. Leading 41-37 at halftime, the Grizzlies were able to pull away in the second half on the heels of strong performances from Mark Brown who scored 18 points along with Kerel Pryce & Stefan Rudic who scored 12 points each.

Saturday started with a tight contest against Nouvelles-Frontieres. With both teams tied at 30 at half time, the Grizzlies came out flying in the third quarter out-scoring the opposition 30-8 on route to an 80-54 victory. Mark Brown led the way again scoring 19 points, while Kerel Pryce added 13 and Nolan Knill and Marlon Campbell both put up 11 points.

The Grizzlies then wrapped up the tournament against the host Fleming Knights. Stefan Rudic had a big game with 21 points while Jevon Francis put up a double-double to help Georgian win the tournament with an 82-63 final score.

The Grizzlies Men’s Rugby Team got back to their winning ways Saturday afternoon with a big 31-7 over the Mohawk Mountaineers at the Mohawk Sports Complex in Hamilton.

The Grizzlies got the lead early and never looked back leading 19-0 at half. Leading the way for Georgian were Chris Wood, Robin Calamatta, Derek Trowell and Chuck Curran who each scored tries, while Steve Sasseville posted four converts and Jesse Twigg registered a penalty try.

The Grizzlies also played hosts to the 2012 Women’s Basketball Fall Classic this past weekend which saw some highly entertaining games being played.

The Grizzlies went winless in the tournament with a 0-3 record but gained valuable experience as they prepare for the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association schedule which gets underway November 2nd with Georgian’s home opener against the Loyalist Lancers.

Georgian had strong performances from Mackenzie Merkley (8.3 pts/game), Kara Faulkner (6.3 pts/game) and Jessica Tinney (6 pts/game) in the three contests.
