Barrie, ON – November 11th, 2012 – It came right down to the wire but the Georgian Grizzlies Men’s Volleyball Team battled to a 3-2 victory today at the Georgian Athletic Centre in Barrie over the visiting La Cite Coyotes.
The game went the five set distance and was back and forth from start to finish, featuring some great rallies, acrobatic digs and some amazing points.
The Grizzlies got up early in the first set but the Coyotes came right back taking the first set 25-20.
The second set featured some incredible paly and could have went either way with both team’s doing all they could to win. The Grizzlies were able to come out with an incredible 32-30 win that needed a tiebreaker to determine the winner.
From that point on there was very little to separate either team.
The Grizzlies were able to win the third set 26-24 to hold a 2-1 advantage and looked to close out the Coyotes in the 4th set but La Cite rallied late to take 25-22 to send it to a 5th and final set.
More of the same fierce competition continued in the deciding frame but it was the Grizzlies who were able to come out in yet in another tiebreaker to win the final set 16-14 and the match 3-2.
Barrie native Lyndon Sonego led the Grizzlies with 19 kills and Darren Govan registered 16 while Michael Vandinther had 11 digs.
For the Coyotes Keith Marier had an impressive effort registering 32 kills in the loss.
The Grizzlies split their weekend home games and are now 3-1 on the season. They will host the Seneca Sting in their next game on Sunday, November 18th at the Georgian College Athletic Centre in Barrie.
