It was a night of great volleyball at the Georgian Athletic Centre when the Georgian Grizzlies hosted the Durham Lords on Friday.
Coming off a loss in their last game, the Grizzlies women’s team got back on track with an impressive team effort leading to a 3-1 (25-20, 25-22, 18-25, 25-21) victory over the Lords.
Fifth year veteran Hannah Campbell (Midland) had an incredible match leading the Grizzlies in scoring with 14 points, a season high.
Georgian also had a nine point effort out of Kelsey Buckley (Midland) as well as an eight point game from Allison Marshall (Orillia).
On the men’s side the Grizzlies had a resilient effort against the tenth ranked team in the country according to the CCAA’s latest rankings.
After dropping the first two sets (25-22, 25-20), the Grizzlies battled back to take the next two sets 25-20 and 27-25 to send the game to a fifth set tiebreak.
In the end the Lords, who hadn’t lost a set on the season prior to the match, were too much to handle in the tiebreak and with the 15-6 advantage Durham won the game 3-2.
Jeremy Hoekstra (Cobourg) led the Lords to victory with 17 point performance and teammate Matthew McGirr (Brampton) had an impressive 15 point effort.
Adam Biebly (Barrie) and Matt Kerr (Wingham) led the Grizzlies with 10 points each.
The Grizzlies will travel to Peterborough next weekend for games against Fleming and Trent. They will play their next home games against Algonquin (Nov. 22) and La Cite (Nov. 23) at the Georgian Athletic Centre.
