The Georgian Grizzlies men’s and women’s volleyball teams headed east on Wednesday night to face the Durham Lords as the race toward the playoffs heats up.
The Grizzlies women put their 11-game win streak on the line against the Lords and unfortunately for Georgian, all good things must come to an end.
While each set was incredibly tight, the Lords were able to win in straight sets 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 28-26).
Brittany Coughlin (North Bay) and Hannah Campbell (Midland) led the Grizzlies with 11 points each in the loss.
It was the first loss for the Grizzlies since Nov. 2 and despite the loss, the Grizzlies hold onto first place in the east division standings by two wins with just three games remaining in the regular season.
On the men’s side, the Grizzlies were looking to snap a streak of their own as the Lords entered the game as the only team undefeated team in the OCAA.
Much like they did when they took the Lords to a five set tiebreak in their first meeting, Georgian pushed Durham hard throughout the match.
In the end it wasn’t to be as the Lords took the match 3-1 (25-21, 25-15, 27-29, 25-23).
Georgian’s Darien Haynes (Barrie) continues to step up as the Grizzlies battle through injuries, registering 16 points in the loss. Haynes has been red hot averaging over 5.1 points per set in his last five games.
The Grizzlies will have some time to regroup as they get set for their next match next Wednesday when they travel to face the George Brown Huskies. Georgian will play their next home game on Saturday, Feb. 7, when they face the Canadore Panthers.
