Barrie, ON – February 16th, 2013 –It was a big game atmosphere inside the Georgian Athletic Centre on Saturday night and rightly so, it was a big game.
The Georgian Grizzlies women’s volleyball team hosted the Sheridan Bruins in a playoff crossover game with a berth in the OCAA Volleyball Championships on the line.
A loud, packed crowd helped the Grizzlies out of the gate, who thanks to third year Midland native Hannah Campbell’s excellent serves catapulted Georgian to a first set 25-17 win.
Sheridan wasn’t to be out done coming right back in the game to take the second set 25-21, but it was the Grizzlies who rebounded after dropping a set.
Keswick native Natalie Buck rallied off some of her 10 kills on the night in the third set to hammer the Bruins 25-12. With the Bruins on the ropes, the Grizzlies went hard for the win taking the fourth set 25-19 to take the match 3-1 and earn a spot in the OCAA provincial championships.
Campbell led the team in points with 14 while Mackenzie Roy had 5 big serving aces and Erin McClean was critical to the team’s success with 9 digs.
The Grizzlies will now head to the OCAA Women’s Volleyball Championships hosted by Trent University in Peterborough which get underway this Thursday, February 21st. Georgian will open with a match Thursday at 1pm against the Nipissing Lakers who finished 2nd in the west division standings during the OCAA season.
