Barrie, ON – The Georgian Grizzlies showed they weren’t going to be pushovers as the hosts of the 2012 OCAA Women’s Volleyball Provincial Championship this weekend.
In their opening match against the Fanshawe Falcons, the Grizzlies were within one point of forcing a fifth and deciding set, but fell 3-1 (25-14, 25-20, 17-25, 27-25).
Erin McClean and Natalie Buck led Georgian with 14 points, while Hannah Campbell added 13.
Against Niagara on Friday afternoon, the Grizzlies bounced back and defeated the Knights 3-1 (25-23, 25-16, 19-25, 25-19). Buck led the Grizzlies with 16 points, while Campbell and McClean added 11 each.
In the bronze medal semi-final, the Grizzlies ran into the Nipissing Lakers. Georgian battled the Lakers tough, but fell in straight sets 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-21). The Lakers went on to defeat Fanshawe 3-1 in the bronze medal game.
The Humber Hawks took home the gold medal, defeating the Cambrian Golden Shield in the finals.
The Grizzlies were awarded the OCAA Fair Play Award at the post-tournament awards ceremony. The OCAA Fair Play Award is awarded to an athlete, team, coach or administrator for their unquestionable demonstration of fair play, respecting opponents and respecting the rules and the officials.
