Five Georgian College students and alumni are among the 83 applicants from graduates and current students of Ontario’s 24 colleges for the William G. Davis Innovation Fund. The Hon. William G. Davis was minister of education from 1962 to 1971 and a visionary who played a vital role in creating Ontario’s college system. The fund was created to honour Davis’ legacy and celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ontario’s colleges. The fund supports innovative thinking and initiatives from aspiring visionaries, artists, humanitarians and entrepreneurs who want to leverage their college education and start something amazing.
Volunteer’s dolls help brighten lives of Dominican children
Meet Ina Wood. Ina is an 80-plus-year-old dynamo who has been working diligently on these cute “Izzy” dolls for the Georgian nursing trip to San Jose de Ocoa, Dominican Republic. Georgian College celebrates kick-off to 50th anniversary
Fifty years ago, Georgian College started as a modest storefront operation at a plaza on Wellington Street in Barrie. There were 101 students enrolled in five programs. Today, the college covers a region that spans thousands of square kilometres from the current Georgian Drive location in Barrie together with campuses in Midland, Muskoka (Bracebridge), Orangeville, Orillia, Owen Sound and South Georgian Bay (Collingwood). There are 11,000 full-time students and more than 125 career-focused programs, including apprenticeships, diplomas, certificates, graduate certificates and degrees.
Survey Technician alumnus Peter Sullivan helping enable sustainable development on Canada Lands
For more than 30 years, Peter Sullivan has worked to implement boundary survey programs and land survey systems in the private sector and in government. In the past 11 years, Peter has led many initiatives, including a program to analyze geomatics and Indigenous property rights and the modernization of survey systems for property boundaries in the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, more than 2,600 First Nations reserves, and Canada’s offshore area and national parks. His office also works with the United States to maintain the world’s longest continuous international boundary.

Since graduating from Georgian 18 years ago, installation and media artist and Fine Arts (certificate and diploma) alumnus Robert Hengeveld has shown his work across Canada, the U.S. and internationally. Art enthusiasts aren’t the only ones reaping the benefits of his unique perspective. Robert instructs, inspires and shares his artwork with people of all ages through workshops. He also steers public exhibitions for those who wouldn’t normally be exposed to art or art galleries.
Design and Visual Arts alumna bringing awareness of First Nations realities to a broad audience
Just a year out of college, Design and Visual Arts alumna Aylan Couchie has built an impressive list of career achievements. A few months after graduating from Georgian, Aylan was chosen from among more than 950 entries worldwide to receive the Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award from the New Jersey-based International Sculpture Center. She also received the inaugural Native Women in the Arts Barbara Laronde Award, which celebrates the career of one outstanding, emerging Northern Ontario-based Indigenous female artist.

Many Canadian municipalities have formed accessibility advisory committees to help their mayors and councils recognize and address the physical barriers that impede people of all abilities with mobility challenges. As Chief Executive Officer of the Registered Practical Nurses Association of Ontario (RPNAO), Nursing alumna Dianne Martin advocates for the province’s thousands of registered practical nurses. In addition to providing leadership to Ontario’s nurses, she also works hard to make a difference in the lives of patients and nursing students through policies, reforms and education.
Advertising alumna an author of a series of sweeping epic tales
Advertising alumna Lorri-Ann Champagne was born with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. In spite of these obstacles, she returned to school as a mature student and graduated from Georgian with honours at the age of 34. Lorri-Ann later became a mother and grandmother and for five years was the volunteer head of the public relations auxiliary at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre until she was no longer able to perform her job due to her illness.
Event Management alumnus establishes innovative business to help manage volunteer teams
Georgian Event Management alumnus Liam Squires was one of the winners of this year’s smOffice contest, which was presented by Chad Ballantyne from The Creative Space in Barrie. Liam received free office space for six months, advice from mentors, and $1,000 cash to help grow and promote his startup. Liam says his business calendar is filling up quickly.
Aviation Management alumnus a supporter of Georgian co-op students
Currie Russell started in Georgian’s Aviation Management program just out of high school. Only 17 years old at the time, Currie completed two semesters of the program and one co-op placement before deciding to pursue different employment. Ten years later, Currie’s love of aviation was still as strong as ever, so he returned to Georgian as a mature student to complete his diploma.

Georgian Business Administration alumnus Alex Brown is a self-proclaimed serial entrepreneur who has started and sold a handful of thriving businesses. He’s also a well-respected operations and corporate development expert and youth entrepreneurship and employment leader in Canada and the U.S. Alex is currently at the helm of Unconscious Content, a media, events and publishing company, and Dollar Beard Club, a subscription-based men’s grooming company that earned $10.5 million in revenue in its first year alone.

Georgian celebrates grand opening of new sports field at Barrie Campus
What started as a field of dreams has turned into reality. Georgian College celebrated the grand opening of a new sports field on Sept. 13 with hundreds of staff, students, dignitaries, alumni and varsity athletes in attendance. Representatives from Ford Motor Company of Canada and Barrie Ford gathered at the Barrie Campus of Georgian College on June 29 to celebrate collaboration with the college and the two-year lease renewal of two Ford electric vehicles (EVs). They also learned about the work students have been doing that will further develop technology and innovation in the field.

Thirty-one years ago, Georgian College opened the Automotive Business School of Canada (ABSC) with strong support from the automotive industry and the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association (CADA) and its provincial member associations. Georgian, CADA and the associations solidified the college’s stronghold in postsecondary automotive education with the grand opening of Federation Hall in the ABSC lobby at the Barrie Campus June 3.

Georgian inaugurates new cenotaph
Troops and officials from CFB Borden and the wider community together officially unveiled the new cenotaph inaugurated at the Barrie Campus on Thursday, October 6. Your Alumni Association donated $10,000 to this project. The cenotaph will be inaugurated at this year’s Remembrance Day service on a very symbolical date – 11/11/11. SAVE THE DATE!

On June 7, Victoria Martin Evans was presented with an International Business Plan Award from the Forum for International Trade Training (FITT) at an awards ceremony in Gatineau, Quebec. The International Business Management graduate received the highest grade for submitting a completed business plan for the FITT skills course in International Trade Management. Georgian College receives $1.5-million gift from Bernick family
Georgian College is blazing a new trail in the academic sector by becoming the first college in Ontario to secure a $1-million endowed chair. The donation has been made by Henry Bernick, an entrepreneur and Barrie’s first land developer, who has been instrumental in the growth of the local real estate market since the 1950s. He has given the gift, which includes an additional $500,000 to create the Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre, with a goal of supporting entrepreneurship education and encouraging innovation in his hometown. The School of Design and Visual Art (SDVA) will present its annual Scholarship Show from April 29 to May 18 in the Barrie Campus Gallery. Work from students in the Art and Design Fundamentals, Fine Arts, Interior Design, Interior Decorating, Jewellery and Metals, Graphic Design, Digital Photography and Imaging and Web Animation and Design programs will be on display. Show hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday, with an official opening on April 29 from 7 – 10 p.m. The Campus Gallery is located in the Helen and Arch Brown Centre for Visual Arts (D building).

Name of Georgian’s newest campus announced
Georgian College’s newest campus will be named the John Di Poce South Georgian Bay Campus. The name for the new facility, located at the intersection of Poplar Sideroad and Raglan Street in Collingwood, was officially unveiled at a news conference at Cranberry Resort this month. The name honours the key donor to the project – developer John Di Poce (pictured above middle, with his wife, Marie, and Georgian President and CEO Brian Tamblyn).

Magazine owned by alumna receives great opportunity
The Government of Canada recently announced funding for Riptide Resources, the publisher of Motorcycle Mojo magazine. First published in 2002, this magazine is owned by alumna Gwen Roberts (School of Design and Visual Arts 1978, Barrie Campus) and her husband Glenn.
