Celebrating 50 years - Georgian College

Help us celebrate Georgian’s golden anniversary!

If you haven’t visited a Georgian campus lately, you’ll want to be sure to attend one of the many events occurring during Georgian’s golden anniversary year. From our annual Georgian Golf Classic and Georgian Golden Gala to our student-run auto show – there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Look for our 50th anniversary celebration station, which will be at select events. It will include an opportunity to look back through Georgian’s history and help shape the college’s future by taking part in the unique time capsule project.

Jan. 27 to Feb. 26, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, Campus Gallery, D Building, Barrie Campus – this commemorative Georgian at 50 student-curated exhibit celebrated 50 years of growth and creativity at Georgian College.

Saturday, March 11, 2017, Barrie Campus Athletic Centre – the annual Traditional Pow Wow is organized by Georgian students, staff and community members in celebration of traditional culture and tradition.

Pow Wow is a time for people to participate, learn, celebrate and share culture and heritage through drumming, singing, dancing, feasting and laughter.

The event also features talented drummers, drum groups and amazing craft vendors.

Thursday, March 23 and Friday, March 24, 2017, Barrie Campus – Georgian’s annual benefit concert has been raising funds for financially challenged students for the past 25 years. The event showcases the talents of students and staff.

Proceeds go toward the Gord Bastian Entrance Award – a $1,000 bursary presented to a first-year Georgian student. The rest of the proceeds go to a special financial aid fund to help students.

This year’s show celebrated Georgian’s 50th anniversary and Canada’s 150th anniversary.

April 5, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Segal International Centre, Barrie Campus – Georgian students, alumni, faculty and staff were invited to share their country of origin on an interactive digital map.

This initiative was organized by Event Management student as a celebration of multiculturalism at Georgian. With 1,500 international students from 60 countries, and many First Generation Canadians, the college is rich in diversity.

Thursday, April 6, 7 to 10 p.m., Lion’s Gate Banquet Centre, Barrie – models donning trends from the 60s through the 00s walked the catwalk to the music of local rock band Cardinal Street at this fundraiser organized by Event Management students.

Other fun activities included retro trivia, a candy bar and photo booth. All funds raised went to Cody’s House – Youth Mental Health Healing Centre, and scholarships for Georgian students.

Dance the Golden Decades 60s 70s 80s 90s 00sDance the Golden Decades

Friday, April 7, 6 to 10 p.m., Ascent Lounge, Barrie – in this dance marathon organized by Event Management students, teams of four to 10 danced to everything from the Beatles to Beyoncé. There were awards for the teams that raised the most money, as well as for best dressed and best dance moves.

All funds raised were donated to the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre Child and Youth Mental Health program and Georgian College counselling and mental health and wellness services.

Saturday, May 6, 2017, Barrie Campus and Casino Rama Resort – Georgian Nursing alumni reconnected with former classmates and toured the Sadlon Centre for Health, Wellness and Sciences during the day.

They then enjoyed dinner at Casino Rama Resort in Orillia and heard from motivational speaker and comedian Jessica Holmes and best-selling author and nurse Tilda Shalof.

Thursday, May 25, 2017, The Club at Bond Head – the Georgian College Classic – one of Simcoe County’s longest-running golf tournaments – raises funds for awards and scholarships.

Funds are raised through individual and team registrations, sponsorship, and an auction, with items donated by Georgian’s industry partners and generous staff and faculty members.

June 2, 3 and 4, 2017, Barrie Campus – the Georgian College Auto Show is the largest outdoor student-run automotive show in North America – perfect for visitors of all ages, their families and our manufacturers to enjoy.

Friday, Nov. 10, 2017, Casino Rama Resort – support student success by attending Georgian College’s premier black tie fundraiser – the Georgian Golden Gala takes place at Casino Rama Resort and will include a cocktail reception, gourmet dinner, silent and live auction, and entertainment. All proceeds from the gala will support student awards and scholarships.
