Men’s Rugby finish season with an OCAA silver

Georgian’s quest for rugby gold was put to an end this past weekend in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) men’s rugby final in a loss to the Durham Lords, 31-17.

Conditions at Thompson Rugby Park in Oshawa were ideal for both teams to put their best foot forward and leave everything out on the field by the end of the match. Durham opened the scoring and the Grizzlies got on the scoreboard shortly afterwards with a penalty kick delivered by Rob Reiners. The half ended with the Lords leading 21-3.

In the second half, it was the Lords on the attack once again scoring another successful try. Pressure mounting on the Grizzlies as the window for turning the game around became shorter and shorter. Georgian fought back with a successful pair of tries by Matt Triemstra, but the Grizzlies were unable to capitalize on the momentum and finished their season with a silver medal.

“After 10 years, that’s probably the most proud I’ve ever been of a team to be honest. We played short handed all season and they played with a ton of tenacity and grit today, I couldn’t be prouder of them. They did everything we asked of them all season and today we just lost to a better team. Full credit to Durham. I could not be prouder of a group of people in my whole life.”

John Daggett, Head Coach

James Robb-Kennedy was named Georgian’s Player of the Game and was named a Championship All-Star as well. Jesse Pustai was also named a Championship All-Star.

Congratulations to our silver-winning Grizzlies!
