The power of women in science – celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science

International Day of Women and Girls in Science – recognized on Feb. 11 – represents the importance of promoting full and equal access to participation in science for women and girls around the globe. At Georgian, we strive to create a learning environment that facilitates equal opportunity and inclusion in our programs.

Whether you’re a current student or considering Georgian for your studies, there are resources available to help you find the right program for your interests – and how to get there.

The Electromechanical Engineering Technology – Mechatronics program has been a positive experience for student Skylar Bezner

Second-year student Skylar Bezner originally planned to pursue an education and career in finance, but her passion for a hands-on, technical craft led her to apply to Georgian for the Electromechanical Engineering Technology – Mechatronics program.

“When I realized I wanted to pursue my passion for engineering and technology, applying for the Electromechanical Engineering Technology – Mechatronics program was easy since Georgian was one of the first colleges to offer a dynamic and innovative program. At first, I was hesitant to apply to a male-dominated program and not sure what to expect but my classmates, teachers, and work experience through co-op have allowed me to grow and solidify I made the right choice.”

While women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) are often still the minority in their school and work environments, Skylar has already begun to build work experience through cooperative education (co-op) and plans to pursue her career as a mechatronics technician when she completes her diploma.

Advice for future students

As one of three women in her program cohort, Skylar’s advice to future students would be to go for whatever it is you’re passionate about. She says the hesitations and reservations will get easier. Skylar also mentioned going into this program has helped build confidence to put myself out there and contribute more confidently in the classroom.
