Walking up the driveway to Muirfield Village Golf Club this morning in the dark with heavy dew surrounding me was a surreal feeling. Massive grandstands around me, and President’s Cup flags line the driveway to the newly renovated magnificent clubhouse. Being a part of this prestigious event on the morning of the first round; I can’t think of anywhere else I would rather be.
The past few days have been amazing. On Monday, I spent some time with Michael Breed from the Golf Channel and 2012 Teaching Professional of the year. I was helping him gain his bearings on the property and we had a great conversation. I asked Michael how he got to where he was today and he told me since he was a child he wanted to teach golf on television. His words for me were to work hard at what you want to do and never take no for an answer. Jordan Spieth also arrived on Monday and he was another genuinely great guy. Jordan was the first player in Monday morning working out in the fitness facility. It is easy to see his dedication to the sport and his excitement of being here this week. Jordan carries himself very professionally and was extremely respectful towards me.
Everything got busy quick today as the crowds rumbled through the gates to get a look at the players warming up. PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem arrived this morning with his executives. I had the pleasure of meeting him and making sure everything was right for his team. We didn’t see much of the players this morning as they were all busy doing their own thing as teams. Players were noticeably more focused this morning and the word from the Assistant Captain of the International Team, Tony Johnstone, is that his team is really pumped up and wants this win over the USA Team. He said the International Team believes they can win even though they are facing an all-star cast on the USA side.
The American pride of their country and team is very noticeable as fans chant U-S-A on every hole and people all over the course are decked out head to toe in red, white, and blue. President George W. Bush arrived this morning and I had the pleasure of showing his security team around the locker room so that they could be familiar with the area. I also had the pleasure of personally meeting Mr. Bush which I couldn’t believe! At this time I really felt like an International amongst the serious pride and representation of the United States. I only hope the International Team can come back on the back nine as I write this because they are currently only leading one match!
The team of Jason Day and Graham DeLaet is great to see because they are both such nice down-to-earth people that will talk to anybody. To see Jason hit that 25 foot put on the 18th hole was amazing because of the pressure that is on him this week to do well at his home club. Overall, the first round matches have made for an exciting day 2 tomorrow. I don’t know how the day could get any better.
