Great Learning Experience for Grizzlies as Kalkanis Soars

Valuable experience was the key word for the Georgian Grizzlies men’s golf team as they competed at the Golf Canada University-College Championship at the Val de Lacs Golf Club in Ste-Sophie, Quebec from May 28th through 31st.

This was the first year the Grizzlies competed at the event which is by invitation only and brings together the best individual and team golfers from both University’s and College’s across Canada.

The men’s team comprised of Clayton Connor (Newmarket), Nolan Knill (Barrie), James Skrypec (Kitchener), Jonah Tremback (Killaloe) and Colton Kalkanis (Hillsdale) who had a good showing their first time out.

The Grizzlies got out to a rough start in the wet conditions of round one but as the tournament went on the Georgian team continued to improve. Another day of unfavourable weather affected round two with rain delays and play eventually being suspended due to darkness.

Once the golfers wrapped up round two Thursday morning the Grizzlies had improved their previous score by ten strokes to move up the standings. Despite putting up their best numbers of the tournament in round three, Georgian was unable to make the cut for the fourth and final round as a team.

On the heels of a 1-under 70 in the third round, Georgian’s male athlete of the year Colton Kalkanis made the cut individually sitting in 8th spot overall heading into the final round of play.

Kalkanis had another strong round shooting a 1-over 72 to close out the tournament at an impressive +4, good enough for a 6th place tie.

The 6th place finish at the event continued to add to the impressive year for the Hillsdale native. Kalkanis was the individual winner at both the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Championship and the Canadian Collegiate Athlete Association (CCAA) Championship back in October and was named a CCAA All-Canadian.

The tournament was won by Ugo Coussaud representing Laval University in Quebec. A native of Angoulème, France, Coussaud finished the tournament with a 4-under score. The team title was won by the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds who shot a 12-over as a group over the four rounds.

Kalkanis was also named to the Academic All-Canadian Team for his excellence as a student athlete.
