When many of the world’s top golfers meet in competition at the prestigious President’s Cup Oct. 1 to 6, a Georgian College alumnus will be in the middle of the action.
Tom Schellenberg, who graduated from Georgian’s Bachelor of Business (Golf Management) degree program in May 2013, has landed a position as assistant to the General Manager at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, which hosts the President’s Cup this year.
Already a keen observer of the golf scene, Schellenberg will provide daily updates on the Georgian College website about what it’s like to work at one of the world’s premier golf events. His posts will be featured on the Golf Management section of the website at georgiancollege.ca/golf-management.
The biennial President’s Cup features a team of 12 American golfers facing a team of 12 international, non-European players. This year’s U.S. team, led by Fred Couples, also includes Tiger Woods. Nick Price is captain of the international squad, which includes Canadian Graham DeLaet.
Schellenberg’s blog series has already begun with a recap of his experiences at the Memorial Tournament, held at Muirfield this past spring. Schellenberg began his job at Muirfield just weeks before the Memorial began on May 27.
As assistant to Muirfield’s general manager, Schellenberg is beginning his golf management career with hands-on, behind-the-scenes team experience. From cleaning out lockers to taking clubs to star player Ben Curtis during a clinic session, Schellenberg has found himself in golf nirvana.
“The player managers and fitness trainers just hung out and talked with us while the players were on the course, which made for some cool stories”, he writes. “Overall, I absolutely loved getting a chance to build a relationship with the PGA players and their teams. It was a week of over 110 hours of work but a great experience in the end.”
Georgian College offers two programs for students wishing to prepare for a successful career in the diverse and competitive industry of golf management. They are Golf Facilities Operation Management two-year diploma and the Bachelor of Business (Golf Management) degree.
The degree is Canada’s only four-year Bachelor of Business program specifically focusing on golf management. Both programs feature co-op internships and educational field trips to learn from golf industry leaders in Canada and internationally. Students even get to train on Georgian’s state-of-the-art indoor golf lab at the Barrie Campus.
