Stacked micro-credential program

The Establishing a Contracting Small Business in Ontario program allows individuals already experienced in trades or construction to develop the skills and knowledge required to set up and operate their own enterprise.

Students will develop a viable business plan that will meet industry-specific regulatory requirements and establish the foundation needed to begin their business operations. With a specific focus on doing business in Ontario, participants will build the skills and knowledge needed to comply with relevant health and safety regulations, follow requirements of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), adhere to industry and labour laws, and fulfil obligations relating to mandatory employee training.

Modules

Students will obtain a digital badge after completing each module. Successfully completing all four modules will result in the overall Establishing a Contracting Small Business in Ontario stacked micro-certificate badge.

Note: Participants are to register by the course start date and must complete the course by the course end date. Each module is expected to take up to twelve hours in total to complete but there is no time limit, as long as the module is completed by the last day of the semester.

Business Planning for Contractors

The Business Planning for Contractors course provides learners with hands-on experience in applying the business planning skills necessary to start a successful small construction business.

Safety, Labour and Licensing Regulatory Requirements

This course examines building construction business operation as required by the Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) and Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Students will learn how to plan for permits and inspections and keep records in compliance with government regulations with significant focus on health and safety regulations. Students will also learn how to maintain employment records for employees to comply with CRA requirements for employment reporting periods.

Contracting Small Business

This online micro-credential will explore the foundational skills and knowledge to successfully operate a contracting small business. Learners will explore how to manage job sites, small teams, and project plans. They will learn the importance of budgeting time and money in order to complete high quality job profitability, all while adhering to industry standards.

Construction Contracting Law and Procedures

In this module, students examine the legal framework under which companies and individuals contract to supply labour and materials to job sites. Students are trained in dispute resolution alternatives to avoid the litigation process. Students learn the rights and obligations of those in the construction pyramid. They also learn organizational strategies to manage risk in meeting critical time lines.
