Meet Georgian College’s President and CEO
Dr. MaryLynn West-Moynes brings extensive academic and administrative experience in postsecondary education in Ontario, having held senior positions at both the college and university level.
She has served as Vice President of External Relations at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), President of Mohawk College, and in numerous senior leadership roles at both UOIT and Durham College.
Throughout her career, MaryLynn has demonstrated an unwavering focus on serving students and meeting their evolving needs. Most recently, her work has involved leading strategic planning; championing co-operative education, international and curriculum initiatives; and forging innovative college and university partnerships and pathways.
She has been responsible for establishing community, government and industry relationships; leading student services, marketing, communications, branding and fundraising teams; and undertaking major financial management and capital expansion projects.
MaryLynn’s accomplishments have been significant and varied since her installation as Georgian’s President and CEO in 2012. They include the addition of 30 market-driven diplomas and graduate certificates; investments in skilled trades and apprenticeship students; and a strengthened focus on curriculum development, quality teaching, social innovation and changemaking.
She championed a dynamic partnership with Lakehead University to increase degree capacity in central Ontario. She also ensured Georgian’s commitment to deepen research and drive innovation with the opening of the new Advanced Technology Centre at the Barrie Campus.
The release in 2016 of a five-year strategic plan, Accelerating Success, featured commitments to internationalize and indigenize the college, and a comprehensive approach to enrich learning through research and scholarship.
With her strong support, Georgian became the first – and only – changemaker college in Canada designated by Ashoka U, recognizing the college’s leadership in social innovation in higher education.
MaryLynn received her PhD from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. Her research examined organizational culture and leadership skills. She holds an MA in adult education from Central Michigan University and a BASc from the University of Guelph.
Community-minded, she has served on numerous volunteer boards and committees throughout her career. Currently, MaryLynn is Chair of the TELUS Community Board in Barrie and member of the SouthWestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT) Network (SWIFT).
Senior Leadership Team
Lisa worked in the private sector for over two decades before moving to the Ontario postsecondary sector in 2009. As Vice President, External Relations and Enrolment, Lisa has line of sight to the student journey from prospect through to alumni. Lisa is energized by the opportunities inherent in influencing and supporting the synergies that occur between areas of the college including Student Recruitment, Marketing and Communications, Enrolment Management, Admissions, Financial Aid, Advancement and Alumni Relations.
Before joining Georgian in 2013, Lisa served as Director of Communications and Marketing at Ontario Tech University and prior to that held various marketing and communications positions at Bell Canada, culminating in the role of Senior Director, Community Affairs.
She has served on committees for Imagine Canada and the Council of Ontario Universities, and has volunteered her time as a non-profit board member. Lisa holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree from McMaster University.
David has more than 15 years of experience in the broader public sector and more than 20 years of extensive professional experience in human resource management and labour relations.
Previously, he was Assistant Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at York University. Prior to that, David spent 16 years as the senior human resources officer at both the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital and the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre.
Before his appointment as Vice President, David taught Human Resources Management courses at Georgian and served on the Human Resources Management Program Advisory Committee and the Barrie Campus Committee.
David holds several degrees, including a Bachelor of Administrative Studies from York University, Master of Laws in Alternative Dispute Resolution from Osgoode Hall Law School and Master of Arts from Central Michigan University. He obtained his Master of Arts degree through the University Partnership Centre at Georgian.
In addition to his multiple degrees, David is a proud graduate of the community college system, with a diploma in Electronics from Humber College.
In his role, David is responsible for all aspects of human resource management, including labour relations, organizational development, recruitment and selection, and payroll and benefits. Additionally, David is responsible for Campus Safety Services, which includes campus security services, conflict resolution and investigation services, health and safety, and parking.
Janet is responsible for Georgian’s digital innovation strategy to enhance student services as well as teaching and learning, both in person and remotely. Janet’s portfolio includes Institutional Research, Information Technology, the Centre for Teaching and Learning and, Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Janet supports strategic projects and planning, as well as process integration and improvements across the college and also oversees Georgian’s Orangeville and John Di Poce South Georgian Bay campuses as well as its Indigenous Services and Employment Ontario and Access programs.
Prior to joining the Georgian team, Janet spent more than 20 years in the Ontario Public Sector in lead planning roles for several large-scale projects including security planning for the G8/G20 2010 Summits and the 2015 Pan/Parapan Am Games.
Janet holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts from Queen’s University and Master of Public Administration from the Schulich School of Business.
Angela is a seasoned executive with a wealth of experience in the private and public sectors. Beginning her career with General Motors of Canada, Angela moved into the Ontario Public Service (OPS). Prior to joining the college, she served as Assistant Deputy Minister within the Family Responsibility Office, Service Ontario and the Ontario Provincial Police. During her 20 years in the OPS she also held positions in the Ministry of Correctional Services, Ministry of the Solicitor General, Ministry of the Attorney General and Management Board Secretariat.
Angela joined the Georgian team in July 2010 and in her current role, she is responsible for Student Success (Library and Academic Success, Co-operative Education and Career Services, Housing/Student Life, Athletics & Fitness Centres, and the Mental Health Strategy), as well as Corporate Services (Financial Planning, Controllership, Legal & Risk Management, Facilities Management). Angela serves as the Secretary-Treasurer to the Georgian College Board of Governors.
Angela holds an Honours Bachelor of Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University, a Master of Science – Management and Leadership from Western Governors University, and is a Certified Professional Accountant.
Kevin is accountable for the content and delivery of postsecondary full-time and part-time (credit and non-credit) programs and apprenticeship for domestic and international students at Georgian. He also oversees corporate training and industry partnerships.
Previously, Kevin was Vice President, International, Workforce Development and Partnerships, at Georgian. In this role, he was responsible for International Education and Development, Part-time Studies and Workforce Development, Research and Innovation, Government and Employment Programs, School College Work Initiative, Indigenous Services, and Partnerships, as well as oversight of operations at the Muskoka, Orangeville and John D Poce South Georgian Bay campuses.
Since joining Georgian in 2014 as Dean, Technology and Visual Arts, Kevin has demonstrated highly strategic and effective leadership on a number of key college priorities.
Kevin has more than a decade of progressively responsible experience in the Ontario college system. Before coming to Georgian, he was Acting Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences and Human Services at Fanshawe College, and prior to that, Chair for Fanshawe’s School of Information Technology. His previous experience in the college sector includes time spent as a professor and program coordinator at Sault College.
In addition to college experience, Kevin worked in software product management roles in the private sector and spent time in the public sector as a spatial analyst. He holds a Master of Science in GIS/Spatial Modeling, Honours BA in Geography and a postgraduate certificate in GIS.
David has worked in higher education advancement for more than 17 years. He leads a team of professionals dedicated to building relationships, raising funds, engaging with alumni and supporting student success. He’s responsible for a diverse portfolio, including development/fundraising, alumni relations, community engagement, and conference and event services.
Prior to joining Georgian in 2019, David served for more than a decade at the Schulich School of Business, York University, where he held positions of increasing responsibility culminating in his role as Executive Director, Alumni Relations and Development. As Executive Director, David managed a team of advancement professionals supporting the dean in all aspects of fundraising and alumni relations, both in Canada and internationally.
Before moving to the Schulich School of Business, David spent two years working at the Royal Ontario Museum, focusing on major gifts and prospect research portfolios. David has also served in advancement roles at Nipissing University and the University of Windsor.
David holds two degrees, including an Honours Bachelor of Arts from Nipissing University and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Windsor. He’s a licensed barrister and solicitor and practiced environmental law and civil litigation prior to returning to the advancement sector.
David has more than 25 years of management experience in multiple industries and roles within the private and public sectors, including leadership roles in consumer packaged goods (Procter & Gamble, Castrol, and Warner Lambert), architecture and engineering, and software development.
David has been with Georgian in a leadership capacity since 2005, joining as the Director Information Technology. He has also held the role of Chief Information Officer and most recently was Executive Director, Enrolment Management and Information Technology. In that role, he oversaw the departments of the Office of the Registrar and Information Technology, and had a leadership role in the implementation of the Strategic Enrolment Management process at Georgian.
In his current role, David is developing and implementing a multi-year digital innovation plan for the college and supporting the creation of a digital culture throughout the Georgian community. David is also accountable for enrolment planning and management, as well as the Information Technology department.
In addition to earning a Master of Business Administration with Distinction from Heriot-Watt University and a Bachelor of Mathematics from the University of Waterloo, David is a Chartered Global Management Accountant and holds a Project Management Professional certification.
Jamie has been an active contributor to Ontario’s innovation and entrepreneurship sector for 18 years. In his role, he leads a creative and impactful team who are committed to helping students and companies in Central Ontario find success in innovation and business.
Jamie holds a PhD from the University of Guelph (Plant Physiology); Master’s Certificate from the University of South Australia (Space Studies); Honours Bachelor of Science from Trent University (Biochemistry); Bachelor of Education from Queen’s University; and Diploma in Visual Art from Sheridan College.
Jamie is a serial entrepreneur having started and grown several companies. Prior to coming to Georgian, he ran Doran Strategic Consulting Inc., providing innovation, management, financing and strategy solutions to colleges, universities, municipalities, and private companies.
Jamie was Chief Operating Officer, Director of Client Services, and Chief Executive Officer for Innovation Guelph between 2012 and 2016. Under his leadership, Innovation Guelph (IG) grew into Guelph’s focal point for innovative ideas and entrepreneurial spirit. He was instrumental in designing, launching and financing IG’s signature programs: Speedway (including Fast Lane and Fuel Injection), Rhyze (supporting women entrepreneurs), and B-Corp Bootcamp (promoting the establishment of benefit corporations).
Jamie formed Kyfak Inc. in 2015 to develop and publish games. The company successfully published their first game in 2016. Jamie’s newest company is called Freaky Wizard Inc.; it specializes in toys, collectibles and wizard supplies, which are sold through an online store and at toy conventions and comic cons.
Jamie is dedicated to adding value to Canada’s innovation and creativity space by supporting innovators, entrepreneurs, and visionary organizations—while at the same time, tapping into the creative spark that makes life glorious and rewarding.
Patty has more than 25 years of senior management experience in the private and public sectors, including leadership roles in higher education and the hospitality and entertainment industry with experience in crisis management, planning and implementation.
Reporting to the President, Patty is responsible for supporting the senior team’s strategic initiatives and government relations agenda. Patty has a Master’s in Leadership and Business Administration, a Bachelor of Business degree specializing in Entrepreneurship, a Certified Meeting Professionals designation, and is a proud graduate of Georgian’s Tourism Management Diploma.
Dave oversees the strategic direction of the Owen Sound Campus. This includes cultivating, developing, and nurturing positive relationships with community, government, and industry partners. He also ensures continued quality programs and exceptional service delivery as well as provides oversight for campus administration, organizational planning, and operations.
Previously, Dave was Innovation Officer for the Municipal Innovation Council in Bruce County where he built a broad network of stakeholders to identify, understand, and co-develop solutions to emerging issues in the community. Dave developed a comprehensive framework for eight municipal organizations that identifies areas of opportunity and the strategic capabilities needed for advancement. He established communities of practice that connect municipal staff from across the council’s membership to learn together, collaborate, and solve common challenges. He also fostered closer ties between municipalities and postsecondary institutions through applied research and work-integrated learning.
Dave is a faculty member at Wilfrid Laurier University and teaches in the Master of Education program. Previously, he served as Associate Director, Residence Education, at the university. He championed collaboration across the institution and the co-creation of innovative programs. Notably, he led the advancement of a nation-leading Residence Education unit, which focuses on student transition and leadership development. The unit was ranked the number one residence program in Canada in 2018 and 2019 by Maclean’s magazine in the comprehensive university category.
Along with extensive curriculum development experience, Dave has provided consulting to numerous postsecondary institutions on designing curriculum for experiential learning outside the classroom and the change management process. Dave has also been actively involved in numerous professional associations committed to student success and sustainable growth in the postsecondary sector.
He has deep ties to the area.
Dave holds a Honours Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education from Wilfrid Laurier University. He’s currently completing his Doctor of Education at Western University in the field of Educational Leadership. He’s also a member of Laurier’s Centre for Leading Research in Education, with a focus on lifespan, living and learning.
Board of Governors
2021-22 Georgian College Board of Governors
The Georgian College Board of Governors consists of 12 members, together with the President and CEO of the college, one student, one faculty member, one support staff member and one administrative staff member. One-third of its membership is appointed through the Public Sector Appointment process and two-thirds is appointed directly by the Georgian College Board of Governors.
The Board of Governors is a corporation. In a legal sense, it is the college. The board is a Schedule III Agency of the Government of Ontario and is accountable through the Minister of Colleges and Universities to the people of Ontario.
In general, a college board has the power to govern the college and in law, is responsible for the college’s activities. However, the college administration, which derives its authority from the board and is accountable to the board, manages the day-to-day activities of the college.
Seeking new recruits
Georgian seeks applications from persons interested in assisting the college’s Board of Governors to achieve its mission, “To inspire innovation, transform lives and connect communities through the power of education.” There are two positions available with a term to commence Sept. 1, 2022. Interviews for the positions will take place in March/April 2022. The positions consist of a three-year term with eligibility for a second term of three years.
The appointment is voluntary. To be eligible to serve on the Board, applicants must have an understanding of, and interest in, education and training issues and linkages to the labour market, good interpersonal and communication skills, and should have demonstrated service and leadership in their place of employment, and/or through community involvement.

Position description – specific accountabilities
- Set the college vision, strategic directions, and overall goals and outcomes within the context of the appropriate laws, government policy, and local need
- Establish and implement the college’s purpose and mission
- Contribute to the development and evaluation of the college Strategic Plan, Annual Report and Business Plan
- Approve the college’s annual business plan and budget
- Establish governance structures to enable the achievement of expected institutional outcomes with clear lines of communication and internal accountability

- Collectively assess the effectiveness of the Board with respect to governance and the attainment of corporate goals and outcomes on a regular basis
- Specify how the Board conceives, carries out, monitors and measures its own tasks
- Evaluate the effectiveness of individual governors at the time of their reappointment

On behalf of the Board of Governors and the presidential selection committee, I’d like to invite the Georgian College community – including students, employees, alumni, governors and other stakeholders – to complete a survey asking for your opinion of the key attributes you think are essential for our next president to be successful.
The survey is conducted by Phelps, one of Canada’s leading executive search and leadership advisory firms. Phelps will use the results of this survey to establish the criteria to select a president who will contribute to Georgian College’s culture by delivering upon the college’s strategic plan, achieving key performance indicators, and building upon Georgian ’s commitments to its students and community stakeholders.

Message from Ali Khonsari, Chair of the Board of Governors
On behalf of the Board of Governors, it’s with mixed emotions I share Dr. MaryLynn West-Moynes, President and CEO of Georgian College, has decided to retire in June 2022 after more than three decades of an exceptional career in postsecondary education – almost 10 of those years at Georgian.
MaryLynn came to Georgian in 2012, bringing extensive academic, administrative and leadership experience. She is highly regarded across both the Ontario college and university systems and well known for her innovative, thoughtful and strategic approach.

Following MaryLynn’s announcement that she will retire next summer, Georgian’s Board of Governors engaged Phelps, one of Canada’s leading executive search and leadership advisory firms, to lead the search for our new president. Georgian College and the wider community celebrated the leadership of a new President and CEO in an official installation ceremony at the Barrie Campus Oct. 11, 2012. The ceremony marked the fifth time in Georgian’s 45-year history that the college has welcomed a new President and CEO.
After being sworn in as Georgian College’s new President and CEO, MaryLynn shared her vision for the college.
“I believe in the value of education. It is life’s greatest equalizer – regardless of where you come from, with the right education and the right attitude, you can make your mark in life,” she said. “I whole-heartedly embrace the responsibility you have given me and I am excited and eager to lead Georgian College.”
MaryLynn will begin her job by focusing on three key strategic priorities. The first is extraordinary teaching and learning through entrepreneurship education, experiential opportunities and technology-enabled delivery. The second is a focus on student access, mobility and choice, by offering expanded pathways and innovative partnerships.
Finally, recognizing that a leading institution must lead from within, Georgian will focus on productivity, innovation and sustainability by applying its values of entrepreneurship and innovation as foundational principles to transform and build on its institutional efficiency and effectiveness through a collaborative process of organizational renewal.
Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty sent congratulations to MaryLynn and to the Georgian community, via a video address. Noting that Georgian has seen just five presidents in its 45-year history, the Premier said “clearly, you choose well when it comes to leaders.”
He described MaryLynn as “an accomplished scholar, a strong administrator and a caring leader.”
“There is greatness in Georgian because you are already doing great work – students, faculty, administrators,” McGuinty noted. “I am confident that Dr. West-Moynes’ leadership will elicit even greater contributions.”
MaryLynn was officially sworn into office by Board of Governors Chair Gwen Strachan. In a symbolic portion of the ceremony, support staff, faculty and administrative representatives removed MaryLynn’s academic regalia, while student government representatives from Barrie, Orillia and Owen Sound placed on her shoulders the official gown of the President and CEO of Georgian College.
Guests included members of the Georgian College Board of Governors, faculty, staff, student and alumni representatives, as well as municipal, provincial and federal politicians. Also attending were Linda Franklin, President and CEO of Colleges Ontario and presidents of three of Georgian’s university partners – Dr. Tim McTiernan from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Brian Stevenson from Lakehead University, Dominic Giroux from Laurentian University, as well as Dr. Harley d’Entremont, Vice President, Nipissing University. Special guests also included past Georgian College presidents Brian Tamblyn and Bruce Hill.
Shaun McCracken, student representative on the Georgian College Board of Governors, told the audience that students already appreciate the new president’s commitment. “MaryLynn is truly focused on student success. It is at the core of everything she does – every conversation she has, every question she asks,” McCracken said. “She is committed to leveraging Georgian’s strengths, continuing to enhance our record for pathways and degrees, and ensuring that the relevant resources and services are in place so the student experience at Georgian is the best not only in the province, but in Canada.”
In a surprise announcement, MaryLynn said she has commissioned a book chronicling important moments and events contributing to Georgian’s heritage during the stewardship of past presidents Tamblyn and Hill. The book, examining the years since Georgian College’s 25th anniversary, will be written by Bob Kennedy, recently retired Vice President, Marketing and Student Services.
