2011/2012 Georgian Co-op Student of the Year Award ($1,000)

Congratulations Ken – you are Georgian’s 2011/2012 Co-op Student of the Year!

Ken Lin knows how to make education work! As a mature student in the Civil Engineering Technology program, Ken excelled in co-op work terms and academic semesters, all while participating in industry, student, and volunteer activities. He was recognized as a student who “has taken on many roles through the time that he has been enrolled in the program, and his efforts have benefitted his fellow students, his team members at work, and his industry colleagues. He has embraced the value of applied learning through co-operative work experience as well as becoming a valued member of the profession, and in the process has continued to give back to the college community.” Ken’s efforts within the college community as a Peer Tutor and Director of Engineering on the Student Administrative Council, combined with his high academic achievement, were also factors considered in his nomination.

“The process of obtaining co-op work placements has offered me great exposure to job searching skills through resume and cover letter writing, interviews, and job acceptance,” says Ken, “the co-op work terms provided me with a network of professional contacts that could help me tap into hidden job markets and hopefully  provide my first job opportunity after graduation.” Through his    co-op experience, Ken was able to recognize the relevance of his academic studies, and contribute knowledge gained through real-life work experience to the classroom.   Ken sums up his co-op experience, saying, “by alternating work terms with study terms, I was able to test the theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom and to develop additional skills at work.”

Congratulations Ben!

Ben Brown is a first-year Georgian College student, enrolled in the three-year Environmental Technology program.  In his final year high school he completed a two credit co-op term, working at Camp Heidelberg Outdoor Education.  This experience provided him with invaluable learning opportunities in outdoor education, and taught him the value of co-operative education.

Recently, Ben was the successful recipient of the Co-op Entrance Scholarship, awarded to a full-time first-year student who could describe the benefits and significance of their high school co-op experience, and how it impacted their decision to choose a co-op program at Georgian College.  According to his teacher at Camp Heidelberg, Ben excelled at his co-op and “proved to be my top student in 12 years, constantly exceeding my high expectations”.  Not only did he develop the instructional materials, he was also given the opportunity to teach the course to fellow students.

Ben realized that his co-op experience provided him with hands-on learning, as well as relevant work experience, career clarification, networking opportunities and personal growth. It also  convinced him that his post-secondary education should include co-op experiences, which brought him to Georgian College.
