A new part-time Practical Nursing diploma program, launching this September at the County of Simcoe’s Georgian Village Campus in Penetanguishene, Ontario will provide access to nursing education closer to home.
The Practical Nursing College diploma program will be delivered part-time, by experienced registered nurses, in a hybrid format utilizing a combination of in-class and online delivery. The program will include in-class labs, clinical placements and theoretical learning. Two to three courses will be offered each semester with a few of the labs taking place at the Barrie Campus.
“Georgian College believes strongly in preparing students to meet employer needs while staying connected with the community and this partnership with the County of Simcoe is an excellent example of this commitment,” says Marian Bolhaar, Manager, Part-time Studies and Workforce Development for Health, Wellness and Sciences at Georgian.
“This program provides an accessible pathway to those currently working in the health care sector as well as for those wishing to pursue a career in nursing. The ability to teach the practical nursing program onsite at Georgian Village will offer students extraordinary experiential learning opportunities during clinical placements,” adds Bolhaar.
The program starts Sept. 8 and runs until April 2019. There is still time to apply for this fall.
“This is an innovative opportunity for students to gain practical nursing experience in a long-term care home setting and bring postsecondary education to small-town and rural Ontario,” said County of Simcoe Warden Gerry Marshall. “Community partnerships create opportunities for our residents and address our need to train more health care professionals. We applaud Georgian College, and look forward to welcoming students to Georgian Village for their studies.”
