For Parents

Welcome to Parents

This is both an exciting and anxious time for most parents as you prepare to send your son or daughter off to college.  We have developed the residence and staffed it in a manner to help your son or daughter with the adjustment to college and college life.

This section of the residence website is dedicated to you, the parents.  We hope you find the information we have compiled to be helpful for you during this time of transition.

Parent Resources

We have several resources available for parents to answer your questions about residence and to assist both you and your son/daughter with their transition to College and living away from home.

We have created a “Parents Quick Glance” guide with all of the basic information that you may need to know about residence such as important dates, residence fees, residence services, contact information, etc.  The “Parents Quick Glance” is available in the Important Documents section.

Our Counsellors in the  Career and Student Success department have created a wonderful document called Letting Go – Staying Connected.  Please take the time to read this document before your son or daughter comes to College.  The document contains a lot of very valuable information that will help you and your son/daughter with the transition to college.

Application Information

Once your son/daughter has been accepted into a program at Georgian College they are eligible to apply for residence.  In their acceptance package they will be provided with their Georgian College student ID# and their password to access the portal.  To apply for residence, they simply need to go to the “Applying” page of this web site and follow the link to the Housing Portal.  They will then need to enter their student ID # and password to access the housing portal.  Once they get to the housing portal, they simply click on the “applications” tab and follow the application steps.

It is important to note that when your son/daughter applies for residence they are applying for either the full academic year (Sept to April) or the winter semester (Jan to April).  When they are offered a space in residence they are committing to a contract for the specific length of time and are financially responsible for the full contract.

Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA)

It is important for parents to understand that all College staff must comply with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. Consequently, without written permission from the student, no information will be released to parents. This includes marks, progression or behaviour issues in residence. All College staff members recognize that this can be stressful for parents especially when they are concerned about their son/daughter. It also is upsetting for parents who are providing some or all of the financial support if they want to know their son/daughter’s academic status. Parents are encouraged to discuss this with their sons and daughters. Any questions concerning the use of this information may be directed to the Freedom of Information Coordinator in Human Resources.

Billing Information

Once your son or daughter is accepted into residence, they will be able to access their residence financial records online.  Your son/daughter logs into the residence portal, same steps as when they were applying, and selects the “Web Accounts” tab.  From this tab they will be able to see details of their accounts, balance, outstanding balances, etc.

Income Tax Receipts

The Georgian College residence is a “designated residence” for property tax and rent purposes, meaning that residence fees cannot be claimed on income tax returns. The only claim that is allowed is $25 for the year (with no receipt necessary), as directed by the Ontario government: for more info, see their 5006-N Completing your Ontario forms (student residence line 6114). For this reason, the College does not issue tax receipts for residence fees.
