Description

This program prepares students with the knowledge, skills and professional competencies required for the Esthetics industry. Graduates of this program are able to provide advanced spa modalities such as; make-up and specialized skin, body and hand/foot treatments. In addition, business applications required to run a small business are emphasized. This program has been specifically designed with the intent to academically prepare the graduate for future international and provincial testing and recognition.


Program Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • apply relevant knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and histology to the provision of specialized aesthetic treatments and services
  • be accountable for the knowledge and understanding of the greater scopes of the health/medical/holistic industry and be able to effectively communicate their effects to clients
  • perform a variety of specialized body and skin care treatments following correct procedures and precautions and supporting client needs (including and not limited to facials, manicures, pedicures, hair removal, and make up applications)
  • use a range of specialized equipment and products, in compliance with established national, provincial, industry, and other related standards, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • adhere to health, safety, sanitation, and infection and prevention control guidelines, according to current legislation and national, provincial, municipal, and industry and environmental standards and regulations
  • identify business skills and activities required for the successful establishment and operation of a small esthetic business in a salon or spa environment
  • select and recommend the use of esthetic products and product ingredients to clients, taking into account health status and identified needs
  • establish and maintain professional relationships in adherence to standards and ethics associated with the profession
  • develop customer service strategies that meet and adapt to individual needs and expectations in accordance with professional standards and ethics
  • determine professional development strategies that lead to the enhancement of work performance and career opportunities and keep pace with industry and environmental changes.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet ONE of the following requirements to be eligible for admission to this program:
- OSS Curriculum: OSSD or equivalent with Grade 12 English C or U (ENG4C, ENG4U)
- Academic and Career Entrance Certificate (ACE) program with: Communications
- Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate (GED)
- Mature applicant with standing in the required courses and/or mature student testing that meets the minimum standards for admission


Applicants who are 19 years of age or over by the first day of classes, and who lack the academic entrance qualifications, may be considered for entrance to an appropriate post-secondary diploma or certificate program as mature applicants. Each applicant will be considered on an individual basis and acceptance will be determined by counseling, Communication Placement Assessment (CPA), previous post-secondary education and evaluation of experience. Some programs also have specific prerequisite requirements that must be met prior to admission. Mature applicants must meet all program specific prerequisites. Those applying as mature students and having no documentation of Grade 12 education must supply, if required, proof of age, such as a copy of an official birth certificate or driver's licence. Refer to Section 2.5 and 2.6 of the Academic Calendar for further details.

Selection Process


Graduation Eligibility

To graduate from this program, the passing weighted average for promotion through each semester, from year to year and to graduate is 60%. Additionally, a student must attain a minimum of 50% or a letter grade of P (Pass) or S (Satisfactory) in each course in each semester.
