Counseling Skills in Oncology  

RNRS1064 – CRN 10435 – Credit Course:

This course is designed to enable the student to develop the knowledge and skills required to establish and maintain a helping relationship with oncology and palliative care patients and their families throughout the trajectory of the cancer experience. Topics to be explored include factors affecting coping and helping relationship effective communication and interviewing skills, crisis management, psychological issues in Cancer/Palliative care and burnout and ethical issues.

Clinical aspects of cancer and cancer care supportive therapies include pathophysiology, genetics, epidemiology, prevention, screening and detection, diagnosis and staging, fatigue, resources, nutrition, pain, psychosocial, sexual and quality-of-life issues.

Topics include nursing management of cancer of the brain and CNS, breast, colon, rectum, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, gynaecologic, head and neck, leukemia, lung, lymphoma, mestastic multiple myeloma, skin cancer, and paediatric cancers.
