Georgian College students and staff think Rotary rocks! The Rotary clubs of Barrie, Barrie-Huronia and Kempenfelt have collectively donated $475,000 in support of Georgian’s Centre for Health and Wellness and scholarships for students studying health and wellness programs.

One hundred and forty-five Rotarians from the Barrie, Barrie-Huronia, Innisfil, Kempenfelt and Springwater clubs visited Georgian on Thursday, Aug. 11 for a club meeting and to learn more about the new community clinics, classrooms, technology and programs for health and wellness students that will be part of the 172,000-square-foot centre. The facility, located at the Barrie Campus, will be ready for student intake when the fall semester begins. The group also met with students from a variety of health care disciplines to talk about the future of local health care.

“It is rewarding to personally meet the students who will be starting their careers in the new Centre for Health and Wellness. They are our future health care providers and our clubs are proud to support them and the valuable services they will provide to our community,” said Stu McMillan, President of the Rotary Club of Barrie.

The community health atrium, which will house the reception area for the six community-accessible health clinics, will be named in honour of the Rotary clubs’ contribution.

The grand opening of the Centre for Health and Wellness is on Wednesday, Aug. 31. The public is invited to tour the new building from 1 to 4 p.m.
