Second-year Fine Arts student Aylan Couchie is organizing an innovative arts event in downtown Barrie this Saturday night – April 5.

who new2Couchie is the spark behind WHO NEW?! Barrie’s Premiere Community Art Crawl, a free self-guided tour of various galleries, studios, musical and eating venues. At least a couple of hundred people are expected to partake, as 157 had confirmed on Facebook as of mid-week.

“I wanted to see more cohesion among the downtown galleries. We’re combining resources to get people downtown for one night of art,” said Couchie. “It should attract a lot of people who don’t usually take in the gallery scene.”

The Front Room Gallery, Art In House, Artist Studios of Aylan Couchie and Lisa Brunetta and D.I.Y. Arts Collective were all created by Georgian Fine Arts students. Other stops on the ‘crawl’ include Gallery 111, Bohemia, Jennifer Klementti Photography, The Edge Gallery, Unity Market and The Grilled Cheese Social Eatery, which is renaming its grilled cheese masterpieces in honour of participating galleries.

“Several groups of students started their own businesses. It’s a great example of Georgian’s focus on entrepreneurship being taken out of the classroom and put to work in the real world,” said Gary Evans, co-ordinator, Fine Arts, Museum and Gallery Studies.

“It’s quite amazing. These students are improving the cultural tourism of the downtown with their studios and this event,” Evans added.

Participants can experience the latest local arts scene all in one night, weaving their way through several opening receptions, musical performances and a huge selection of artworks from 7 to 11 p.m. Maps will be provided at each participating location.
