The five-kilometre walk is in celebration of Oral Health Month and National Dental Hygienists Week (April 5 to 11). The event kicks off at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, April 6 at the Barrie Campus.

Dental Hygienist Co-ordinator Anne-Marie Conaghan says the student-organized event will raise funds to support oral health initiatives with the program’s community partners, which include Youth Haven Barrie, Couchiching Jubilee House and Hospice Muskoka. It will also help students meet both course and overall program learning outcomes.

“A healthy mouth contributes to a person’s overall sense of well-being,” says Conaghan. “Oral Health Month and National Dental Hygienists Week is the perfect time to educate people on the role of the dental hygienists and assistants and the importance of dental hygiene – in particular, how taking care of our mouth, teeth and gums positively impacts on other aspects of our lives.”

Staff and students who wish to help the team raise money for the cause are invited to drop off donations at the Oral Health Clinic in M Building at the Barrie Campus. Donations of more than $20 are eligible for a tax receipt.
