?It was a great showing for the Georgian Grizzlies at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) East Regional Badminton Championships hosted by Cambrian College in Sudbury on Feb. 2 and 3.
The Grizzlies were able to successfully defend their titles as men’s and women’s regional champions after an impressive effort by the Georgian athletes.
Sean Irving was able to run the table on the men’s singles side going 4-0 in the round robin and after defeating Georgian teammate Andrew Hill in the semi-finals, Irving was able to defeat Cambrian’s Andrew D’Agostino 2-0 (21-13, 21-10) to win the men’s singles title.
The Grizzlies also had success on the men’s doubles side as McLean Brownlee and Trevor Neville put together a 4-0 record to finish in first place, while Georgian also claimed the women’s doubles title with Rebecca Trischler and Carolyn Tubman going 2-0.
Georgian wrapped up the tournament with Logan Dayus and Maggie Tremblay taking a second place finish in the mixed doubles competition.
Next up for the Grizzlies are the OCAA Provincials which will be hosted by Centennial College Feb. 15 and 16 in Scarborough.
Georgian will host the CCAA Badminton National Championships from Feb. 28 through March 2.
