Great participation at Women in Trades event

Groups of women huddle around engines in the marine engine shop at the Midland CampusThe Robbert Hartog Midland Campus added a successful addition to this year’s Skilled Trades Expo: Women in the Trades – an Evening for Women, sponsored by Hydro One. The event was well attended with more than 70 women participating, despite the dark and gloomy weather.

A panel of trades women shared stories of their journey, the barriers they overcame and the successes they now enjoy. They were diverse and inspiring – every woman in attendance could relate to their message in one way or another.

Additionally, women had the option to participate in their choice of a hands-on workshop.

The YMCA Employment Services and the Georgian Bay Native Friendship Centre’s career and employment program were there to offer support and answer questions. Gift bags and door prizes of tools and tool kits were given out as well.

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make the event a success. It is clear that women are ready, willing, able and very interested in the skilled trades.
