March 18, 2015

Join Barrie's growing entrepreneur community at UP: an entrepreneurial evening. Thursday, April 18, 2015. Networking marketplace: 6 to 10 p.m. Keynote speakers: 7 to 9 p.m. Georgian Theatre, Georgian College Barrie Campus.Georgian College Event Management students are in high gear planning UP, an exciting event for this spring season. Catering to aspiring and practicing entrepreneurs alike, this event is designed to assist individuals who are interested in, or currently running their own business. With keynote speakers and a networking marketplace, this event will facilitate growth in start-ups in and around the Barrie area.

UP will be held at the Georgian Theatre on the Barrie Campus of Georgian College on Thursday, April 9, 2015. Doors open at 6 p.m., speakers begin at 7 p.m. and the night draws to a close at 10 p.m.

Through selected keynote speakers, UP will allow entrepreneurs to hear the anecdotal tales and the hard-learned lessons of some of today’s successful business minds. Sharing their struggles, failures, and successes, these diverse speakers offer accessible and applicable insight and advice for starting and running a new business.

In conjunction with the speaker sessions, the UP Marketplace offers guests, participants, and service providers an opportunity to build meaningful connections and learn from each other. In an industry where connections are key, this is an invaluable component to the event. With the support of the Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre, this event has already built momentum and established itself as an important event to attend.

The event planning team is spearheaded by students – Event Director Shelby Harrison together with Kayla MacDonald, Shelby McKeen, Liam Squires, Nataliia Syliuk, Diane Morrow, and Sabrina Freeman. Along with her colleagues, she hopes to bring local entrepreneurs together and help them find out what is happening in the world of start-ups. The Marketing and Communications Manager for the event, Liam Squires, explains that he has a particular passion for this event.

“As I’m navigating the process of starting a business myself, I know this is a great opportunity to bring local start-ups together; to learn from, connect with, and support one another,” said Squires. “Allowing organizations and services to share how they can help each other grow is a great opportunity for everyone and makes this an invaluable experience.”

UP organizers expect to host over 400 guests and several service providers. Tickets are now available at a price of $20 for general admission, $10 for Georgian College students, and an option for VIP access for an additional $10 per person. All proceeds from this event will be donated to Junior Achievement of Central Ontario, helping youth in the community explore entrepreneurship. The UP Planning Committee is one of four teams in Georgian’s Event Management graduate certificate program. The program, now with its fourth cohort, teaches students how to plan, program, and execute successful events, including galas, tradeshows, sport competitions, and festivals. Courses cover planning and programming, human resources, marketing, finance and beyond to provide a well-rounded educational experience. As part of their studies, students must apply their classroom learning and demonstrate their ability to work together in order to develop and implement their own unique event.
