Tough weekend for Grizzlies on the court
November 26, 2012

November 25th, 2012 – The Georgian Grizzlies men’s and women’s basketball teams didn’t find any friendly faces as they each hit the road for a pair of games against Durham and Fleming.

On Friday night the teams travelled to Oshawa to take on the Durham Lords kicking off with the women’s game. The women found difficulty in holding onto the ball leading to too many turnovers which the Lords took full advantage of.

The Lords were able to take a commanding 37-21 into halftime and never looked back handing the Grizzlies a 73-46 loss.

Georgian’s Kimberly Solorzano led the Grizzlies with 10 points.

The Grizzlies men’s team tried to spoil the Lords party who retired the number of OCAA men’s all-time leading scorer Anthony Batchelor prior to tip off.

Unfortunately for Georgian, the Lords were able to use the momentum of the special tribute to take it to the Grizzlies. Georgian didn’t do themselves any favours coming out of the gate slow and only putting up 5 points in the first quarter.

After trailing the Lords 36-21 at the half, the Grizzlies had a much better second half scoring 46 points but the gap was too much for Georgian to overcome falling to the Lords 82-67.

Stefan Rudic led the team with 20 points while Jevon Francis had 15 in the loss.

The Grizzlies then travelled on to Peterborough to face the Fleming Knights.

The women’s team continued their tough start to the OCAA season and struggled out of the gate finding themselves in a 35-4 hole after the first quarter. Despite playing tight the Knights the rest of the way the first quarter deficit was too much for the Grizzlies to overcome falling 78-42.

Jelena Percy and Jessica Tinney each had 6 points for the Grizzlies in the loss.

It was a similar story for the men’s team on the afternoon as they found themselves trailing 40-26 at halftime. The Grizzlies found their scoring touch in the second half putting up 29 points in the third half alone but it wasn’t enough as they fell 70-60.

Stefan Rudic led the Grizzlies for the second straight game with 20 points.

The Grizzlies men’s team will face La Cite on Sunday, Dec. 2nd at the Georgian Athletic Centre at 1pm.

Both the men’s and women’s teams will wrap up their first half schedule when they host the Seneca Sting on Wednesday, Dec. 5th at the Georgian Athletic Centre.
