Truro, Nova Scotia – October 20th, 2013 – The Georgian Grizzlies women’s volleyball team travelled to Nova Scotia to compete in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) Tip-Off Tournament this past weekend.
The trip was good for the team, giving them a chance to bond before their Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) season gets underway this Friday when they host the Loyalist Lancers at 6pm at the Georgian Athletic Centre in Barrie.
Coming off a 4th place finish at last year’s provincials and with a group of ten returning veterans and a strong group of freshman joining this year, they will be a team to watch this season.
First up for the Grizzlies was an exhibition match in Halifax with the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics, one of the top teams in the ACAA conference. It was a tight match but the Mystics were able to take the match 3-1 on Friday night. This was only the start of the two teams becoming familiar with each other.
On Saturday the Grizzlies travelled to Truro, Nova Scotia for the ACAA Tip-Off Tournament hosted by the Dalhousie University Agricultural Campus.
Georgian had a strong first day going 3-1 finishing second in their pool. Their only loss came to the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics who Georgian split sets with, losing the first 25-14 but won a thrilling second set 35-33. The Mystics were given the win based on points in the tournament format.
On day two in the playoffs, the Grizzlies had 2-0 victories over the University of New Brunswick Saint John (25-19, 25-20) and over fellow OCAA member St. Clair College (25-20, 25-17) to earn a berth to the finals.
For the third time in three days the Grizzlies met the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics, this time with the tournament title on the line. The Mystics were able to get the better of Georgian in two tight games 25-22 and 25-21 to claim the title, giving Grizzlies a well-deserved second place finish.
