Men’s Rugby Prepares for Playoff Battle
October 31, 2012

Barrie, ON – After waiting a few extra days to find out their opponent in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) playoffs the Georgian Grizzlies Men’s Rugby team will travel to Markham to face the Seneca Sting this Saturday, November 3rd at 2pm.

The Grizzlies had to wait to determine their playoff opponent as the final game of the round robin between Mohawk and Conestoga originally scheduled for this past weekend had to be postponed due to inclement weather. The game was played on Tuesday night with Conestoga winning 32-0. The win moved Conestoga into second place in the final standings, dropping the Grizzlies to 3rd in the West Division and set up the playoff crossover against the East Division’s 2nd place finalists the Seneca Sting.

Georgian finished the season with a 3-2-1 record while Seneca finished with a 4-2-0 record in the round robin schedule.

For Grizzlies Head Coach John Daggett he knows his team is in for some stiff competition.

“They (Seneca) have been a powerhouse the last number of years and they are competitive every year,” said Daggett. “We know we are in for some tough competition, but we like where we are and we feel we have just as good a shot as anybody to win.”

The Grizzlies finished off the round robin schedule with a bye week so the team has not played since October 21st, but Coach Daggett feels the extra layoff will be a bonus for his group.

“It gave us a chance to heal up a bit after a tough season. In a lot of cases our guys have been playing rugby since April so it was good to get a week away for our guys both physically and mentally.”

The winner of the crossover playoff matchup between Georgian and Seneca will move on to face the Humber Hawks in the OCAA Semi-Finals.
