Boischatel, Quebec – October 16th, 2013 – Georgian Grizzlies men’s golfer Colton Kalkanis sat in a tie for first after the first round of play at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Golf National Championship held at the Royal Quebec Golf Club in Boischatel, Quebec.
Kalkanis shot a 4-under round of 68 to open the three round tournament on Wednesday and is tied with Humber College’s Alex Dumais on top of the leaderboard. Ironically, Kalkanis and Dumais tied for the silver medal recently at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Golf Championship.
A native of Barrie, Kalkanis is the defending champion at the CCAA National Championship having won the tournament held in Oshawa, Ontario last year.
The Grizzlies men’s team currently sits in 5th place after round one just three strokes out of medal contention. Michel Sonnenburg (T-27th), Sterling Emery (T-35th), Alex Wilson (T-43rd), and Clayton Connor (T-48th) round out the Georgian team.
On the women’s side, OCAA silver medalist Chloe Wells of Mississauga rebounded on the back nine to sit in a tie for 13th after the first round. Her teammate Cory Pond of Simcoe is just one stroke back tied for 16th.
The duo, who won bronze at the OCAA Championship are currently tied for 7th in the women’s team standings after round one.
Round two gets underway on Thursday morning before wrapping up on Friday with the third and final round.
