Fresh off an individual win at the OCAA Golf Championships in Windsor last week, Georgian’s Colton Kalkanis has little time to celebrate as his focus now shifts to the 2012 PING CCAA Golf National Championships hosted in Oshawa, Ontario.
The Hillsdale native was the clubhouse leader from start to finish shooting a three-over 213 at the 54 hole event winning the men’s individual title by two strokes. He became the first Georgian men’s golfer to win an OCAA gold medal since 1999.
For Kalkanis, who has been playing golf since he was seven years old, the work has only begun as he prepares for the biggest and final tournament of the year.
“I’m going to practice every day and try to fine tune everything for the Nationals,” said Kalkanis leading up to the event. “I want to be at my best when the tournament gets underway.”
Kalkanis won’t be the only one representing Georgian at the nationals as both the men’s and women’s teams had impressive showings at the OCAA Golf Championship.
The men’s team took a home a silver medal with a team total of 887, falling just three strokes shy of the first place Humber Hawks.
James Skrypec finished in a tie for fifth after shooting 76 on the final day. Jonah Tremback and Nolan Knill were tied for 16th and 20th place respectively, while Clayton Connor rounded out the Grizzlies in 24th position.
The women’s team also reached the podium, claiming a bronze medal, after shooting a team total of 184 on the final day. Alyssa DeFoe finished in fourth place, while Avery White was 10th.
Both the men’s and women’s teams will compete at the 2012 PING CCAA Golf National Championships which take place October 15-19 at the Oshawa Golf and Curling Club in Oshawa, Ont hosted by Durham College.
Best of luck to both the Men’s and Women’s Teams this week in Oshawa!
