Scarborough, ON – February 16th, 2013 – The Georgian Grizzlies badminton team enjoyed a successful weekend both on and off the court while at the OCAA Provincial Championships hosted by Centennial College in Scarborough.
On the court Georgian’s Sean Irving led the way for the Grizzlies earning a silver medal in men’s singles only losing to former two time OCAA gold medalist Tim Chiu in the finals.
Rebecca Trischler and Carolyn Tubman earned a bronze medal in women’s doubles with an impressive performance defeating the hosts from Centennial in two straight games.
The Grizzlies went deep in each discipline making it to the semi-finals in men’s and mixed doubles as well.
Prior to the tournament it was announced that Georgian Head Coach David Wesley had been named OCAA Coach of the Year. The Borden, Ontario native helped guide the Grizzlies to both men’s and women’s OCAA regional titles, with seven of his student-athletes earning a berth to the OCAA championships. These seven Grizzlies have also automatically qualified for this year’s CCAA Badminton National Championship, which Georgian hosts later this month.
Wesley is a nominee for CCAA coach of the year with the winner being announced at the national championship in Barrie.
Georgian’s Trevor Neville was also announced as an OCAA Badminton All-Star prior to the provincial tournament.
