Grizzlies Weekend Recap

The Georgian Grizzlies had a busy weekend with several sports taking centre stage.

The weekend kicked off with the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Home Opener Friday night at the Georgian Athletic Centre in Barrie.

Both teams opened their Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) schedules when they hosted the Loyalist Lancers.

Kara Faulkner put up 13 points for the Women’s Team but it wasn’t enough as they fell to the Lancers 51-40. Full recap here

The Men’s side played a thrilling game that went right down to the wire. The Grizzlies were able to tie the game late sending it to overtime but ultimately fell to the Lancers 85-76. Full recap here

Both Grizzlies’ Basketball teams had a quick turnaround hosting the St. Lawrence- Kingston Vikings on Saturday afternoon. The Women’s team couldn’t get their rhythm going in the game, losing to the Vikings 65-29. Full recap here

The Men’s Team came out struggling falling behind the Vikings 21-4 at one point in the first quarter, but the team showed tremendous resilience battling all the way back to tie the game in the 4th quarter.

The great comeback was not to be as the Vikings were able to gain the lead late coming away with a 58-53 win over the Grizzlies. Full recap here

The Grizzlies Men’s Rugby Team travelled to Seneca to face the Sting in their OCAA crossover playoff matchup. The Grizzlies battled hard in the first half facing a 12-7 deficit. The Sting were able to pull away in the second half winning 50-7. Despite the playoff loss the Grizzlies made tremendous strides this season and will be a force in the OCAA for years to come. The Grizzlies Men’s and Women’s Volleyball team’s made a northern road trip to Sudbury playing the Boreal College Vipers Saturday and the Cambrian Golden Shield on Sunday.

The Women’s Team started the trip and season with a 3-0 win (25-12, 25-13, and 25-9) over Boreal. Erin McClean had 9 kills and 9 digs in the victory. The Grizzlies women then ran into a tough Cambrian team and fell 3-1 to split their weekend record. Full recap here

The Men’s Team was rolling winning 3-0 over Boreal largely thanks to Michael Vandinther and his 20 dig effort. The Grizzlies then went into Cambrian and put together another solid effort winning 3-1 to have a perfect 2-0 record to start the season. Full recap here
