The Georgian Grizzlies men’s and women’s volleyball teams had a pair of big efforts that led to wins on Sunday afternoon when they hosted the La Cité Coyotes at the Georgian Athletic Centre.
The Grizzlies women’s team kept on rolling as they claimed their fifth straight victory by sweeping the Coyotes 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-14).
The impressive victory was helped by the terrific play of fifth year middle Hannah Campbell (Midland) who had a team high 12 points in the contest and rookie Brittany Coughlin (North Bay) who had 10 points on the afternoon.
Mackenzie Roy (Barrie) continued her strong play as she had 7 points including 4 serving aces while also posting 29 assists.
The Grizzlies sit in first place in the east division standings with a 7-1 record on the season, ahead of Trent who are currently 6-1 as the only other one-loss team.
The Grizzlies men’s team found themselves in a battle after dropping the first set to the Coyotes.
Georgian showed great resiliency to fight back and take the next three tight, high pressure sets to earn a 3-1 victory (20-25, 25-16, 29-27, 26-24)
The Grizzlies were led by the solid play from rookie Darien Haynes (Barrie) who had a team high 18 points while teammate Jason Grimm (Orangeville) had 17 points.
Michel Leblanc had 19 points and Nicolas Toupin had 17 points for the Coyotes in the loss.
The win improves the Grizzlies record to 3-5 on the season as they look to turn around a difficult start to the year and have now won two of their last three games.
The Grizzlies volleyball teams will wrap up the first half of their season this coming Friday when they travel to Belleville to face the Loyalist Lancers.
