London, ON – October 6th, 2013 – The Georgian Grizzlies men’s and women’s volleyball teams competed in the 2013 Fanshawe College Overkill Volleyball Kick Off Tournament this past weekend in London, Ontario.
The Grizzlies women’s team showed early that they will be a contender in the OCAA this season putting together a 2-1 record in the round robin on Saturday. The Grizzlies fell to the host Fanshawe Falcons 2-1 (15-25, 25-15, 15-6) in the opening match of the tournament before rallying off impressive 2-0 victories against both the Mohawk Mountaineers (25-18, 25-16) and the Niagara Knights (25-18, 25-11). The results were good enough to place the Grizzlies in 2nd place after round robin play.
Day two began with the Grizzlies taking on the Seneca Sting who also finished 2-1 in the round robin in third place. It was a tight matchup but the Sting were able to beat the Grizzlies 2-0 (27-25, 26-24) in a match that could have went either way.
Georgian then had a rematch with Mohawk in the 3rd place game which the Grizzlies were able to control winning in straight sets 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 26-24) to claim the third prize.
Grizzlies 4th year Middle Hannah Campbell was named a tournament all-star after having a very strong tournament.
On the men’s side the Grizzlies opened day one by finishing with a 1-2 record in the round robin after close losses to Fanshawe 2-1 (25-22, 21-25, 15-11) and a win over Boreal 2-1 (25-14, 21-25, 16-6).
In the playoff round Sunday, the Grizzlies fell to Seneca 2-1 (25-27, 25-22, 19-17) in a very close match before defeating Boreal 2-0 (25-19, 25-16) to finish the tournament in 5th place.
Both the Grizzlies men’s and women’s volleyball teams will host the Redeemer Royals in exhibition volleyball matches Tuesday, October 8th at the Georgian Athletic Centre.
