Barrie, ON – The Georgian Grizzlies volleyball teams had a super day of their own on Sunday when they faced the visiting La Cité Coyotes.
After a first set to forget, the Grizzlies women’s volleyball team responded by winning three straight in impressive fashion for a 3-1 victory (22-25, 25-12, 25-18, 25-16), the team’s 12th win of the season.
The underdog Coyotes gave the Grizzlies an early scare but the play of Natalie Buck (Keswick) helped get things turned around in the second set. The fifth year veteran came up with some big plays helping the Grizzlies regroup as part of her six points on the afternoon.
Another pair of veterans in Erin McClean (Barrie) and Hannah Campbell (Midland) put Georgian over the top as each had matching team highs with 16 points each.
With a 12-3 record the Grizzlies are sitting in third place in the east division standings, just a half a game out of second place and two games out of the top spot with three contests remaining.
The men’s game followed a similar script with the Grizzlies struggling early and dropping the first set to the Coyotes 25-16.
Georgian regained their focus elevating their game winning three straight sets to win the match 3-1.
The Grizzlies have been red hot as of late having now won three straight games.
Jason Grimm (Orangeville) continued his strong play for the Grizzlies leading the team with 16 points, his third straight game in double-digits. Teammate Lyndon Sonego (Barrie) remains in the top five of OCAA scorers with another 14 point effort in the win.
With three games remaining the Grizzlies are sitting in fifth place in a very tight east division and they could finish as high as third place if they keep up their strong play.
The Grizzlies men’s and women’s volleyball teams will play their final regular season home game this coming Wednesday, Feb. 5 when they host the George Brown Huskies at the Georgian Athletic Centre at 6 and 8 p.m.
